What is News?

News is information about an event, occasion or mishap that happened recently and has not been reported before. It is about people and their activities, and can also be about the environment and natural disasters.

News articles should be factual and contain no opinion or bias. It is important to get quotes from the people involved in the story and use well-written, short sentences. The reader should be able to read the article in one sitting without getting bored. In-depth News pieces often take a specific subject and research it heavily. This might include interviews with individuals or detailed charts and graphs. For example, a report on a fire might be accompanied by an in-depth article about the lives of those affected by it.

There are many things that might be considered newsworthy, but what makes something newsworthy is often down to the way it affects society. Celebrities, for instance, are of interest to the public as are their actions and what they say. The weather, food and drink shortages, crop diseases, hospital openings and closures and the prices of goods in the market all make the news. The death of a famous person can also be newsworthy if it is sudden or unexpected.

The main job of News is to inform readers, listeners and viewers. However, entertainment can also be provided through other media – music and drama programs on radio and newspapers with crosswords or cartoons. In addition, information can be found in textbooks, where it is used to teach and educate.
