What Is Home Improvement?

Home improvement is anything done to repair, modify, upgrade or improve a home. It also includes additions, landscaping and other non-structural projects. It’s a popular pastime among homeowners, and a big business for contractors and stores like Home Depot.

Some projects can’t wait. A leaky roof, a cracked foundation or an electrical problem are just some of the fixes that must be made immediately to prevent further damage and keep residents safe. These are usually emergency home improvements that add to a homeowner’s cost but are necessary.

Other renovations are more planned and may be intended to increase a home’s value. A sparkling bathroom remodel, a new kitchen or even a basement finish are some examples of a home project that is intended to add value. However, the return on these types of investments can vary widely depending on what’s being renovated and by whom.

When hiring a contractor for a home improvement project, it’s important to do your research. Look up a potential contractor’s license status, insurance policies and work history. If possible, find out if they belong to a trade association or are accredited by an industry body.

If you’re planning to complete a major home improvement project, such as a kitchen or bath remodeling, it’s advisable to speak to a couple of potential contractors before selecting one. This will ensure that all parties have the same expectations and avoid any misunderstandings or disputes down the line.
