What Are Automobiles?

Automobiles are vehicles used for transportation. They are usually four-wheeled, have seats for a driver and a few passengers, and use an internal combustion engine to power themselves.

They are often much faster than walking or riding a bicycle, and are far more convenient than using public transport. There are many different types of automobiles, including passenger cars (cars and buses), cargo cars, and special automobiles (fire engines, ambulances and police cars).

The scientific and technical building blocks for automobiles go back several hundred years, but the modern car came about in the late 19th century. The United States had a large market, a high per capita income, and a lower cost of raw materials than Europe, making it the ideal place for mass production. The introduction of the Model T made a car affordable for almost everyone.

Modern automobiles are complex, and their design depends on their intended use. Automobiles designed for off-road driving need rugged systems with strong resistance to severe overloading and extreme operating conditions. High-speed road vehicles need advanced engine and suspension designs, optimized vehicle stability, and comfortable, quiet passenger seating.

Having your own car makes it easier to get where you need to go, and gives you more freedom over your schedule. However, driving can be dangerous if you are not careful. Be sure to follow traffic laws and wear a seatbelt, and be aware of reckless drivers. If you are not comfortable with driving, consider renting a car.
