What Is Technology?

Technology

Technology consists of all the things that science allows us to make and do. That includes everything from new cars and surgical techniques to computers and robots.

Life without technology would be impossible!

Technological developments have improved the quality of people’s lives in countless ways. They’ve helped deaf people hear and dumb people speak, and they’ve allowed us to travel to far-flung worlds.

Often, these advances are achieved through the work of individual inventors. But they also depend on social and economic forces.

The decision to undertake, pay attention to, invest in, and use a particular technological system is often determined by government policy and by the circumstances of a society at a certain time. Such decisions bear on a wide variety of aspects, including economic (only so much money is available), political (local, state, and national regulations), social (public opposition, environmental impact), and ethical concerns (disadvantages to some people, risks to subsequent generations).

Most technology designs operate within constraints that must be identified and taken into account. Among these are physical laws, manufacturing and maintenance costs, and demands on personnel. An optimum design takes into account all these and strikes some reasonable compromise.
