Relationships 101

Relationships

Relationships are defined as any relationship involving emotional intimacy. These relationships can be casual, romantic, platonic, open, non-monogamy, polyamorous or committed. They can include sex, marriage, or other legal partnerships such as civil unions. Relationships are a large part of human life and are found in all cultures and belief systems. They can be positive, negative, healthy, unhealthy or toxic. All relationships exist on a spectrum that can range from healthy to abusive, with everything in between.

The presence of someone you love makes you happy, this is proven by research that shows certain parts of the brain are stimulated when you are near your significant other. Having someone to lean on during hard times can help keep you emotionally stable, as can sharing memories of happy moments together. In addition, having a loving partner can help to lift your mood when you are feeling down by bouncing off of their positive energy.

Intimacy in a relationship is about building trust and learning to let your guard down with the person you love. It is also about respecting the other person and allowing them to be themselves and not trying to change them. It is important to remember that not everyone will be compatible with you, but it is still a beautiful thing to find out who fits in your life and can stand by you through the rough patches. The biggest red flags to look out for in a relationship are disrespect, dishonesty and physical abuse.
