What is News?

News is information about something significant that happened, is happening or will happen. It can be broadcast on television, printed in a newspaper or posted online. It can also be emailed to a friend or shouted across a classroom. It’s anything that makes you say, “Gee Whiz!”

News can be about almost anything. It may be about people, places or events in the world, local activities, weather conditions, art or entertainment. It could be a celebrity, an important figure from history or an up and coming politician. It’s about what matters to a person and how they feel about it.

It’s important to remember that when writing news, it’s not the journalist’s job to inject their own opinion into an event. The writer should stick to the facts and interview sources as much as possible. This allows the reader to make their own conclusions about an event. It’s also a good idea to use quotes from the source, rather than paraphrasing it yourself.

The concept of news-ness has been developed within research on media genres, journalism practices and audience studies. It’s a theory that identifies the factors that influence news-ness and its outcomes. It is grounded in the notion that news stories must be both interesting and accurate. It is an attempt to understand what makes a story worthy of being news, so that people are motivated to read them and share them with others. The idea of news-ness has been applied in a variety of ways, including studying the content of a particular newspaper, analysing the reasons behind news selection and examining a list of events that have been determined to be of interest to readers.
