Home Improvement Mistakes to Avoid

Home improvement

Whether you want to boost your home’s curb appeal, spruce up your kitchen or add an extra bedroom, many homeowners consider a variety of home improvement projects. But, before you unleash your inner Bob Vila, be sure to do some homework. Home improvement projects that aren’t well-thought out can backfire, especially if they cost more than you could get back at sale time. Here are a few common renovation mistakes to avoid:

Not all home improvements improve your home’s value, and some can actually detract from it. Avoid slapping on high-end options that may turn off potential buyers. Instead, stick to more affordable choices, like installing smart thermostats and energy-efficient windows.

One of the best ways to improve a home’s curb appeal is by adding some greenery. Planting trees that are known to add value include oak, spruce, hemlock and eastern red cedar. But, beware of trees that are known to decrease value, such as female ginkgo biloba, sweet gum and locust.

A fresh coat of paint can transform the look and feel of a room, and it’s a relatively inexpensive project, according to HomeAdvisor. A gallon of paint can run you about $30, but you can also get creative with accent walls and fun patterns to really spruce up your space. Don’t forget to update your home insurance after you finish the project. As your house’s value increases, your old policy might not offer enough coverage. Check with your local agent for more information.
