A team sport is an activity that involves a group of people on the same side working together towards a common objective. In most cases this goal is to win the game, but in other types of sports it can be to achieve a specific level of performance. Generally, team members work in a supportive and trusting environment to accomplish the goals of the team. Examples of team sports include hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball, cricket and ice hockey. However, the definition of a team sport has come into question in recent years as some sporting activities have different objectives and rules to those considered “traditional” team sports. For example, swimming, rowing, sailing and dragon boat racing are often described as team sports although these do not involve teammates facilitating the movement of a ball or similar object in accordance with rules in order to score points.
Taking part in a team sport can teach children the value of commitment, training and achieving goals. It can also be a great lesson in dealing with setbacks and learning to use them as a tool for future success. It is often a great place to develop leadership skills as team athletes are constantly working with a slate of other players and coaches, many of whom may become positive role models in the athlete’s life.
Finally, team sports are fun and offer a great opportunity to socialize with friends. In addition, there is the added motivation to make sure you do not miss a game as you will have your teammates to hold you accountable.
