How to Write a Good News Article

News

News is what you see on television or hear on the radio each day. It’s the latest news about what is happening in the world and the latest information about what has happened in the past.

A Bug Bited Man is Not News (unless it’s a cooked dog)

When we think of news, we often envision stories about unusual events that occur outside of our normal social lives and have an impact beyond one person’s life. For example, if a child is taken to hospital because of an animal bite, or if a woman is raped in her home, we think of these as news because they have an impact on our world.

How to Write a Good News Article

The most important thing to remember when writing a news article is that it should be current. You don’t want to write about something that happened a week ago, because it doesn’t do anyone any good.

Start by asking yourself the “5 W’s”: Who, What, Where, When and Why? Knowing these will help you get the most information into your article as quickly and efficiently as possible.

When you are writing a news article, you’ll want to use the active tense for introductory sentences like “Arsenal were beaten by Manchester United last night.” This is faster than the passive tense of “Manchester United beat Arsenal…” and it uses less words, so it’s easier to read. Using the active tense is also preferable for paragraphs because they can be shorter and more concise.
